I'm no psychologist but it sounds to me like you were trying to connect with your father.

I wonder what this need is all about. It doesn’t feel good. Even my dad’s heroic plaques have become holes in the wall. Tiny emptinesses that need constant adoration to be filled. I don’t want my father’s plaques. It is too much work trying to be a hero in other people’s eyes.
